Why you should install a Unichip in your vehicle

Unichip – Frequently Asked Questions
· What is the Unichip?
Unichips are fully programmable engine management systems which allow 408 fuel and ignition parameters to be altered through a vehicle’s standard Engine Control unit (ECU) to deliver maximum power, optimised drivability and improved fuel economy.
Unlike other performance chips, the Uni Q chip is not a replacement pre-programmed chip that is made to fit all vehicles of the same sort.

Unichips work in harmony with the standard ECU and is mapped on your engine while on a chassis dynamometer to obtain the safest maximum power, torque and optimum fuel economy.

Unichip Plug and Play

· Why should I install a Unichip to my Vehicle?

The most obvious reason is to increase engine performance.
Significant gains in torque and power across the entire RPM range are possible.
In addition, the engine will be smoother, deliver greater response and maximise fuel efficiency at all RPM and throttle positions.
A second reason is to harness the performance value of engine and exhaust modifications.
Standard engine management systems are not programmed to cater for exhaust branches, gasflowed cylinder heads, high performance air filters or reprofiled camshafts.

· How does the Unichip Increase Power & Torque?

Every engine requires optimum ignition timing and air fuel ratio at all RPM and load conditions.
The Unichip gives the experienced Dynamometer technician the access to, and ability, to adjust and optimise both the ignition and fuel system.
The Unichip has 17-RPM sites between 500 RPM and 8000 RPM and 12 load sites between zero throttle position and wide-open throttle position.
This equates to 204 possible adjustments for fuel and a further 204 adjustments for ignition timing. If you need more information, ask the Expert at the SAC Branch near you.

· How much extra Power can I expect from the Unichip?

Power gains of 10 KW to 30 KW are commonplace, as measured by an accurate chassis dynamometer.
Whilst less common, power gains of 50 KW have been verified.
The exact power gain however depends on the design and condition of the engine and the factory calibration of the engine control unit.
No two engines are identical.
The Unichip results represent the optimisation of each individual engine.

The Unichip results are verified by before and after dynamometer tests measured at 100% throttle opening across the entire rev range.

Ask your local SAC service provider about the various options available and the power figures associated with them.

· Will the Unichip Improve my Car’s Fuel Economy? Yes…

In most driving conditions, the Unichip will improve fuel economy.
Many modern fuel injected vehicles waste fuel by running very rich air fuel ratios at part throttle openings.

With the Unichip, it is a simple procedure to correctly adjust the air fuel ratio over 12 throttle positions and maximize the fuel economy for cruising at part throttle.

· How is the Unichip different from other “Performance Chips”?

The Unichip is a supplementary engine management system.
As such, it is far more advanced than “generic plug-in performance chip” products.
It is individually programmable to meet the requirements of the engine and the driver.

In the early eighties, modified or gasflowed / big valve cylinder heads were only ever found on racing cars. Today gasflowed / big valve cylinder heads have become very popular, given the current fuel pricing and huge gap in price between the top and middle of the range models, to enhance the power output of almost any modern vehicle. Why does one Gas Flow a Cylinder Head?

Simply because this is what enhances the power.
In order to maximise the explosion within the combustion chamber area of the cylinder head, we need to let as much as possible air / fuel mixture into the chamber.
This mixture enters the chamber through the inlet port and is controlled by the inlet valve.
Once this mixture is in place and gets ignited by a properly timed spark, the piston is forced downwards.
The bigger the explosion, the more the downward force and the result is “More Power”.
After the combustion stroke has taken place, the burnt gas exits the chamber past the exhaust valve and through the exhaust port into the exhaust system.
This entire process is enhanced when the cylinder head has been gasflowed.

How do we do it?

Without going into great detail for obvious reasons, we use a flowbench on which we are able to measure port flow before and after the head has been flowed.
In most cases we are able to increase the flow through a port by roughly 20%.
This is achieved by carefully removing sharp edges and rounding acute corners, concentrating usually at the roof of the port where the highest flow activity takes place.
We remove as little material as possible to ensure a lower overall port volume.
Depending on the requirement, in most cases we tend to go for high flowing, small, high velocity port, which produce good top end power with virtually no bottom end loss.
A great deal of time is spent on the valves and valve seats, where we gain good air flow with small valve openings.
The combustion chamber as well as the exhaust ports are also changed considerably to promote more complete combustion.

The Power Plug is not to be confused with the mostly, overseas sourced and local condition non-specific, re-flash methods of tuning that most performance enthusiasts seem familiar with in which the OEM ECU code is simply generically re-written with a hand held programmer via the vehicle’s OBD port.

With the Power Plug, all the changes occur within this unit and are electrically communicated to your vehicle’s engine control system.

No changes are made within the OEM computer, and thus all the engine safety parameters as set by the manufacturer remain in place.

And once the Power Plug is installed, it leaves no electronic “footprint”, and this also applies should you want to remove the unit, unlike when you program the OEM ECU with a re-flash programmer, the ECU knows and records that it has been reprogrammed.

Even if you re-flash your OEM back to stock prior to service work, the OEM ECU dutifully reports how many times it has been re-flashed whenever the dealer checks via their diagnostic equipment, and if it reports something different than what the dealer’s records reflect, some difficult questions could arise.

Installation

The Power Plug comes as a complete stand-alone product, complete with a wiring harness that plugs directly into the OEM ECU via connectors that are perfectly matched to the factory connectors on your vehicle.

There is no dangerous or complicated cutting into of wires on your vehicles existing main wiring harness and there is also no room for errors by wiring the wrong wires together.

From start to finish, most installation times are less than five minutes (depending on the options you choose) and everything stays as is in your vehicle.

No extended and inconvenient vehicle down time, no long hours spent on the dyna, and no stripping and modifying of parts.

As already mentioned, the Power Plug is completely removable, and this means that you can choose to remove the unit from your vehicle when you want to sell it or you can transfer it to another vehicle of the same model type should you upgrade your vehicles.

Tuning Options

The basic Power Plug kit comes in the form of a unit that has only one performance option fitted and is non-switchable to other performance maps.

But you can also opt for the more flexible multi-map unit, which includes a two-position option via which you can change between a standard map and the upgraded map, or you can configure that same unit to allow you to choose from up to five different map settings for your vehicle.

So now you can have an everyday traffic map, a map for towing, a map for open road performance but to name a few of the options that can be tailor made for whatever motoring requirement you might have.

At this stage, this technology and switching capability is via a neat and functional unit supplied with the Power Plug, but Bluetooth switching is currently being developed so that you can change the performance map on your car via your cell phone in the future.

This flexible and local condition and vehicle specific method of tuning can in layman’s terms be likened to an artist painting his own renditions of what he sees as opposed to someone merely photocopying a picture of something not quite the same as what the artist sees but still hopes that it will work and look almost like the artist’s efforts.

The city is home to the first SAC Bakkie Centre, which has opened on the corner of Meteor and Chromium Road in Uraniaville, Klerksdorp. The new SAC Bakkie Centre will offer all that SAC has become known for, including world class vehicle servicing and performance enhancement, but it will focus solely on pick-ups and the growing SUV leisure market.

This includes vehicle maintenance and servicing, performance enhancement and dyno tuning, the fitment of off road and leisure equipment and specialist advice.

In support of this new innovation, SAC has partnered with the off road and lifestyle specialists at Safari Centre 4×4. This means that the new SAC Bakkie Centre not only offers vehicle maintenance and performance enhancement services, but also a comprehensive range of off road conversion equipment and accessories and the technical expertise to fit this equipment.

According to Charl Roos, SAC Trucks and SAC Bakkie Klerksdorp co-owner, the overwhelming increase in requests for commercial vehicle enhancements and accessories made the decision to create the new SAC Bakkie Centre easy. “And who better to compliment the SAC culture than a well-established and prominent entity in the 4X4 sector than Safari Centre!”

Says SAC Trucks managing director, Hein Lategan: “SAC has become a lifestyle which is expressed in both work and leisure. We at SAC cater for both the truck owner that needs to keep his vehicles operational as well as the customer who wants to enjoy his vehicle or bakkie during his free time.”

The SAC Bakkie Centre builds on the expertise and nationwide network of the SAC Group. Today, SAC employs over 375 staff and has a network of 10 SAC Truck and general 10 SAC service centres. Fitted with a completely new 3.0 litre D-TEQ engine that produces a very decent 120 kW at 3600 rpm, along with 360 Nm of torque that is delivered over a rev range of 1800 – 2800 rpm, this popular bakkie produces good performance figures in stock standard trim.

The 0-100 km/h sprint is taken care of in just short of 13 seconds; the 1 km sprint comes up in 34 seconds at 150 km/h odd, and top speed stops at 175 km/h. But when fitted with a SAC PowerPlug, this all changes for the better. Now you might be wondering exactly what is a PowerPlug and how does it work on my vehicle?

In simple terms, the PowerPlug is a pre-wired unit in the form of a re-programmable piggyback computer that plugs into your vehicles standard Electric Control Unit. So there is no cutting and guessing with your vehicles existing and complicated wiring harness. This unit then allows one of SAC’s top-class tuners to fine-tune your vehicle on the dyna to local South African conditions whilst most importantly, not affecting any of the electronic safety parameters built into the engine’s ECU by manufacturers.

After this had been done, power and torque figures from the dyna should see your Isuzu make around 15% more power and 20% more torque.

The raw data thrown out by the Isuzu KB 300 D-TEQ LX Double Cab 2×4 when independently tested at the high altitude of the world-renowned Gerotek testing facilities was even better.  0-100 km/h now comes up in less than 11 seconds, the 1 km sprint is down to 32 seconds at almost 160 km/h now, and finally the top speed, although this is a very arbitrary number in terms of everyday driving, is up to just over 180 km/h.

But what may count even more to many in the real, locally, traffic congested, world of constantly having to overtake large trucks and slow moving traffic out on the open road; is the fact that the overtaking times are greatly reduced at the same time.

The 60-100 km/h segment in 4th gear is now completed in 8 seconds as opposed to 9 seconds, which in turn is quite a large distance on the road.

The ever realistic, 80-120 km/h test in 5th gear is subsequently down over 2 seconds, and this translates into a massive saving of time on the wrong side of the road.

SAC have enhanced thousands of VW’s over the years at their branches situated around the country and many Citi Golfs in that mix too.

But the thinking behind this particular car was to demonstrate some of their capabilities within an ever decreasing motoring budget that is the unfortunately the norm these days.

Over the years, the Citi Golf has been constantly upgraded, in fact the interior of the latest derivatives are a far cry from the original in terms of look, and the ROX was chosen because its sporty dark interior aptly harks back to that of the first GTI.

But this upgrade treatment was not only the reserve of the interior; the powerplants keep getting stronger too over the years.

So much so that the current 1.6 litre on test here makes 74 kW at 5 400 rpm and 140 Nm at 4 400 rpm and this is good enough to see the ROX hit 100 km/h in a shade under 11 seconds, cross the ¼ mile in almost 18 seconds, go through 1 km in 33 seconds at just over 150 km/h.

Top speed, which is academic in an aerodynamically challenged vehicle, comes in at 175 km/h.

But adding some serious bite to the cool new bark that the 70mm stainless steel De Graaf mandrel bent free flow exhaust, that was developed specifically in conjunction with SAC, and the De Graaf performance branch now delivers, comes courtesy of a cylinder head that has been gas flowed to perfection and fitted with SAC custom big valves and a camshaft that has been cut to SAC’s own special requirements.

A Sportflo air filter, air box mod and adjustable rising rate fuel pressure regulator also do duty.

This somewhat grumpier and 20% stronger Citi Golf now romps to 100 km/h in just over 10 seconds, gets through the ¼ mile in the low 17’s and only stops when the top speed has passed the 180 km/h mark.

In fact to put the sprinting difference into proper perspective, the standard car got to 160 km/h in a tardy 46 seconds, the SAC ROX gets there in 32 seconds, a massive 14 seconds difference at the oxygen deprived altitude of the Reef

This impressive trend continues in the in gear acceleration tests that see the SAC car romp through the gears way quicker that the standard car without having a negative effect on fuel consumption when driven normally.

Finally using a UNI Q Chip to merely show off the technology and functionality that can now be applied to an everyday street car, the team at SAC set up the ROX with a natty adjustable launch controller for lightning quick starts, a lower rev limiter option and even an immobiliser selection all via the supplied rotary switch that forms the final but non essential part of this upgrade that would suit the absolute enthusiast.

Although the group offers a full house Stage 3 TRD supercharger kit for this engine, (you will be hearing more about this once the test results are completed), this particular upgrade here mostly shows off the best that one of their own state of the art in house divisions, SAC Engineering and their principle product suppliers, can deliver in naturally aspirated form.

The Cruiser is no slouch in standard trim, a healthy 170 kW of power and 360 Nm of torque that is available from the trusty V6 ensures decent acceleration and overtaking ability, but the quest for more is ever present, especially if you want to tow or lug around stuff on the back.

By applying the trusted principles of improved volumetric efficiency, which basically means getting as much air in and out engine as quickly as possible while being able to completely ignite it and utilise it all in order to ensure maximum power without sacrificing reliability or drivability, the team at SAC were able make the Cruiser substantially quicker and better across all the standard road test segments when independently tested at Gerotek just outside Pretoria.

As always, SAC have various stages available to suit any budget, and first up the pick-up received a Wildcat performance branch and full 76mm stainless steel free flow exhaust along with a SAC airbox mod that allows for better airflow in and out of the engine, all expertly controlled by a Uni Q Chip that ensured the fuel and timing was spot on.

The net result was that the pick-up now made around 195 kW and 420 Nm and could get to 100 km/h in 10.46 seconds, down from the standard bakkie’s 11.55 seconds, along with a top speed that went from 171 km/h to 188 km/h.

This Stage 1 upgrade that takes about 2 days to install and comes in at a price that starts at around R13 000, depending if you want to opt for the slightly more expensive ceramic coated branches or not.

But for around a further R12 000 you can opt for the roughly one week Stage 2 option, and this sees the cylinder heads being gasflowed and blue printed to perfection, and your Cruiser now blasting to 100 km/h in under 10 seconds at 9.78 seconds, with all the in gear acceleration times being substantially quicker as well as a top speed that now comes in at 195.69 km/h thanks to the roughly 220 kW and 470 Nm under your right foot.

Besides the drivability that has improved so much, you will not believe that this is the same vehicle you drove into SAC with, towing, karting goods around or climbing up your favourite mountain range now becomes an absolute breeze, all the while your pocket benefits from improved fuel consumption.

Paying as little as possible for an exhaust system translates into you more than likely getting a noisy system that is generically bent, and ultimately crimped closed, on a pipe bender and welded to universal mild steel silencers.

But this is certainly not the case with the completely handmade, stainless steel, mandrel bent, 76mm system that is available for the 6.0 litre Generation IV V8 powerplant on Lumina. This system is equal in terms of quality, look, fitment and power gain to any system, costing thousands of Euros or Dollars, on the shelf overseas today.

In standard form the Lumina SS produces 270 kW at 5 700 rpm and a peak torque of 530 Nm at 4 400 rpm,

strong enough to get this full sized sedan to 100 km/h in a fraction over 6 seconds, 200 km/h in 23 seconds, and stop at a limited top speed of 237 km/h.

On goes the SAC exhaust and now not only does your Lumina sound the business, it also goes quite a bit better thanks to the extra 20 horsepower that is now on tap under your right foot. 100 km/h comes up in under 6 seconds in a tyre smoking blur, and 200 km/h is dispatched in not much over 21 seconds.

Thanks to a little R1 000 mod that can be done at the same time as the R12 000 bespoke exhaust system is fitted, the top speed limiter is removed and the Lumina now also romps to a top speed that is on the fast side of 260 km/h.

The 0-100 km/h sprint is taken care of in just short of 13 seconds; the 1 km sprint comes up in 34 seconds at 150 km/h odd, and top speed stops at 175 km/h. But when fitted with a SAC PowerPlug, this all changes for the better. Now you might be wondering exactly what is a PowerPlug and how does it work on my vehicle?

In simple terms, the PowerPlug is a pre-wired unit in the form of a re-programmable piggyback computer that plugs into your vehicles standard Electric Control Unit. So there is no cutting and guessing with your vehicles existing and complicated wiring harness. This unit then allows one of SAC’s top-class tuners to fine-tune your vehicle on the dyna to local South African conditions whilst most importantly, not affecting any of the electronic safety parameters built into the engine’s ECU by manufacturers.

Volkswagen’s Citi Golf has been one of South Africa’s most popular cars since its humble beginnings back in the late seventies with sales still continuing as strong as ever today some 30 odd years down the road.

SAC have enhanced thousands of VW’s over the years at their branches situated around the country and many Citi Golfs in that mix too.

But the thinking behind this particular car was to demonstrate some of their capabilities within an ever decreasing motoring budget that is the unfortunately the norm these days.

Over the years, the Citi Golf has been constantly upgraded, in fact the interior of the latest derivatives are a far cry from the original in terms of look, and the ROX was chosen because its sporty dark interior aptly harks back to that of the first GTI.

But this upgrade treatment was not only the reserve of the interior; the powerplants keep getting stronger too over the years.

So much so that the current 1.6 litre on test here makes 74 kW at 5 400 rpm and 140 Nm at 4 400 rpm and this is good enough to see the ROX hit 100 km/h in a shade under 11 seconds, cross the ¼ mile in almost 18 seconds, go through 1 km in 33 seconds at just over 150 km/h.

Top speed, which is academic in an aerodynamically challenged vehicle, comes in at 175 km/h.

But adding some serious bite to the cool new bark that the 70mm stainless steel De Graaf mandrel bent free flow exhaust, that was developed specifically in conjunction with SAC, and the De Graaf performance branch now delivers, comes courtesy of a cylinder head that has been gas flowed to perfection and fitted with SAC custom big valves and a camshaft that has been cut to SAC’s own special requirements.

A Sportflo air filter, air box mod and adjustable rising rate fuel pressure regulator also do duty.

This somewhat grumpier and 20% stronger Citi Golf now romps to 100 km/h in just over 10 seconds, gets through the ¼ mile in the low 17’s and only stops when the top speed has passed the 180 km/h mark.

In fact to put the sprinting difference into proper perspective, the standard car got to 160 km/h in a tardy 46 seconds, the SAC ROX gets there in 32 seconds, a massive 14 seconds difference at the oxygen deprived altitude of the Reef

This impressive trend continues in the in gear acceleration tests that see the SAC car romp through the gears way quicker that the standard car without having a negative effect on fuel consumption when driven normally.

Finally using a UNI Q Chip to merely show off the technology and functionality that can now be applied to an everyday street car, the team at SAC set up the ROX with a natty adjustable launch controller for lightning quick starts, a lower rev limiter option and even an immobiliser selection all via the supplied rotary switch that forms the final but non essential part of this upgrade that would suit the absolute enthusiast.

Although the group offers a full house Stage 3 TRD supercharger kit for this engine, (you will be hearing more about this once the test results are completed), this particular upgrade here mostly shows off the best that one of their own state of the art in house divisions, SAC Engineering and their principle product suppliers, can deliver in naturally aspirated form.

The Cruiser is no slouch in standard trim, a healthy 170 kW of power and 360 Nm of torque that is available from the trusty V6 ensures decent acceleration and overtaking ability, but the quest for more is ever present, especially if you want to tow or lug around stuff on the back.

By applying the trusted principles of improved volumetric efficiency, which basically means getting as much air in and out engine as quickly as possible while being able to completely ignite it and utilise it all in order to ensure maximum power without sacrificing reliability or drivability, the team at SAC were able make the Cruiser substantially quicker and better across all the standard road test segments when independently tested at Gerotek just outside Pretoria.

As always, SAC have various stages available to suit any budget, and first up the pick-up received a Wildcat performance branch and full 76mm stainless steel free flow exhaust along with a SAC airbox mod that allows for better airflow in and out of the engine, all expertly controlled by a Uni Q Chip that ensured the fuel and timing was spot on.

The net result was that the pick-up now made around 195 kW and 420 Nm and could get to 100 km/h in 10.46 seconds, down from the standard bakkie’s 11.55 seconds, along with a top speed that went from 171 km/h to 188 km/h.

This Stage 1 upgrade that takes about 2 days to install and comes in at a price that starts at around R13 000, depending if you want to opt for the slightly more expensive ceramic coated branches or not.

But for around a further R12 000 you can opt for the roughly one week Stage 2 option, and this sees the cylinder heads being gasflowed and blue printed to perfection, and your Cruiser now blasting to 100 km/h in under 10 seconds at 9.78 seconds, with all the in gear acceleration times being substantially quicker as well as a top speed that now comes in at 195.69 km/h thanks to the roughly 220 kW and 470 Nm under your right foot.

Besides the drivability that has improved so much, you will not believe that this is the same vehicle you drove into SAC with, towing, karting goods around or climbing up your favourite mountain range now becomes an absolute breeze, all the while your pocket benefits from improved fuel consumption.

The good news is that these upgrades apply directly to the 4.0 litre Hilux, Fortuner and Prado as they share the same engine, and in principle can also be applied to the likes of Nissan’s V6 Navara, Isuzu’s 3.5 litre V6 and Ford’s big 4.0 litre V6.
